How long should curtains be?

Floor length is the usual choice, with the fabric either just clearing the floor or breaking slightly on it. Sill length is used where furniture or a radiator sits under the window. The room decides.

What does lining actually do?

Lining adds a second fabric layer behind the curtain. It blocks more light, protects the face fabric from sun fading, helps the curtain hang with a fuller shape, and adds insulation at the glass.

Can curtains be used with blinds or shades?

Yes, and it is common. The blind or shade handles daytime light control close to the glass, and the curtains add softness and close for privacy at night.

How much fabric width is needed?

Curtains need more fabric width than the window itself, or they hang flat when closed and have nothing to gather when open. The fullness you want is part of the measure.
